- Converting GLB to OBJ is the right move when the next tool refuses glTF: Blender, Maya, and older CAD seats all read OBJ.
- OBJ splits materials into a sibling
.mtl. Keep the two files together or the mesh arrives untextured. - Going back the other way (OBJ to GLB) does not restore PBR data a classic OBJ never had.
- Convert from the richest file you own — GLB to OBJ, never OBJ to STL to GLB.
GLB is the format modern tools produce and browsers render; OBJ is the format everything older still accepts. That gap is why people convert, and it is also why conversions quietly go wrong: OBJ looks like a single file in a dialog box, but it is really a mesh plus a separate material file, and the moment those two are separated the model loses its look.
When OBJ is the right target
| Situation | Convert? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Blender, Maya, or a DCC pipeline | Yes | OBJ is the widest-supported import there and survives old tools and exporters. |
| CAD or CAM seat that predates glTF | Yes | These tools simply have no glTF reader. |
| Sending a part to be 3D printed | No — use STL | Slicers want geometry only; OBJ brings a material file they ignore. |
| Publishing to a website or engine | No — keep GLB | GLB is one file with textures inside, which is what the web wants. |
Converting without losing the model
Start from the GLB
Convert from the file that still has everything. Converting an OBJ that came from an STL only compounds losses.
Convert locally
Run the conversion in the browser so an unreleased model is never uploaded to a stranger, and no credits are spent.
Carry the .mtl with the .obj
Keep both files in the same folder with the same base name, or the receiving tool loads grey geometry.
Re-check the mesh
Open the result in a viewer and confirm triangle count and bounding box before you hand it on.

The .mtl is not optional
If a colleague says the OBJ you sent is untextured, the mesh is probably fine — the .mtl did not travel with it (or the texture paths inside it are absolute paths from your machine). Zip the set, or send the GLB instead.
Frequently asked
Does converting GLB to OBJ keep textures?
It writes them into a separate .mtl plus the image files. Keep the trio together and the model looks right.
Is OBJ better than GLB?
No — OBJ is more compatible, GLB is more complete. Compatibility is the only reason to make the swap.
Does converting cost Pixal3D credits?
No. Conversion runs locally in your browser. Credits only apply when you generate a new model on the AI 3D generator.
Next steps
Need the model in the first place? Generate it from one photo on the Pixal3D image-to-3D generator, then inspect it in the GLB inspector before exporting. The format decision table lives in the GLB vs STL vs OBJ guide.
