OBJ Viewer Online: Open a Mesh and Its .mtl in the Browser

OBJ is a mesh plus a sibling .mtl plus its textures. Open the set locally to see which parts you actually received, and why a model arrives grey or black.

OBJ Viewer Online: Open a Mesh and Its .mtl in the Browser
TL;DR
  • An OBJ viewer exists to answer: does this mesh and its material file actually load, and at the right size?
  • OBJ is text plus a sibling .mtl — if the pair is split, the model opens grey, which is a packaging problem, not a broken export.
  • OBJ keeps UVs, so unlike STL it can show a diffuse texture; it does not carry animation.
  • Viewing happens locally, so nothing is uploaded and no credits are spent.

OBJ is the format that refuses to die, because it is readable text that any tool from any decade can parse. That same plainness is why OBJ files surprise people: the mesh is one file, the material is another, and the textures are usually a third and fourth. A viewer is how you find out which of those you actually received, before you spend an afternoon rebuilding a material that simply did not ship.

What an OBJ delivery actually contains

PartWhat it isSymptom when missing
The .obj fileVertices, UVs, normals and face indices as plain text.Nothing loads at all.
The .mtl fileMaterial definitions, referenced by name from the .obj.The model loads correctly but entirely grey.
Texture imagesReferenced from inside the .mtl, often by relative path.Materials exist but render black or flat white.
Scale conventionNot stored — only numbers. The model imports at the wrong size in every tool that disagrees.

A sane OBJ handoff

1

Open it before you send it

Confirm the mesh loads and the material is applied. Finding out after the handoff costs a round trip.

2

Check the bounding box

OBJ carries no unit, so the only way to know the intended scale is the number you wrote down when you exported.

3

Ship the set, not the file

Zip the .obj, the .mtl and every texture it references, keeping the folder structure the .mtl expects.

4

Offer GLB as the alternative

When the recipient only needs to look at the model, a single GLB removes the whole class of missing-file problems.

Grey is the most common OBJ complaint

Nearly every "the OBJ has no textures" report is a missing or mis-pathed .mtl. Check the material before you re-export the mesh — the geometry is usually fine.

Frequently asked

Can I open an OBJ online without uploading it?

Yes. The viewer here parses the file in your browser, so the mesh stays on your machine.

Why is my OBJ black instead of textured?

Usually the .mtl was found but its texture paths point somewhere that no longer exists. Re-export with relative paths.

OBJ or GLB for a website?

GLB. It is a single file with textures embedded, and the web loads it natively.

If the OBJ came from a scanned or generated model, compare it with the original on the Pixal3D image-to-3D generator. The GLB inspector covers the glTF side of the same checks. Format choices are laid out in the GLB vs STL vs OBJ guide.
